Monthly Cycles and the Moon

(And a few brave men who want to understand women more.)


Ever notice that your monthly menstrual cycles are 28 days apart?

Ever notice that the full moon cycle is also 28 days apart?

Ever notice that the “crazies” come out around the full moon?


All of this is not a coincidence.


In fact, it is very much a part of us.


I didn’t put two and two together, in fact, I had never even noticed it before I started on a natural, plant based, high raw food diet. I had been on birth control for most of my adult life, so my body’s cycle was controlled by a pill.  As a teenager I wasn’t regular either. I was close, but never to the exact day. Seemed I was always caught by surprise.

After I had my second child, I got my tubes tied and didn’t need to take the pill anymore. I was wide open to all of the up and down emotions and irregularity again. I decided to get an app on my iPhone called Period Tracker, which helped me gage how long my average cycle was and when my next one should start. It usually started within 5-10 days or so of when the app said it would.

Once I decided to start losing weight and started eating more raw food and eventually a high raw food diet, it took a little bit of time, but I started to become more regular with my cycles and one day I realized that my cycle started the same day as the full moon. I thought this might be a bit of a coincidence at first, so I started to pay attention and the next month…yep! you guessed it…I started the same day as the full moon.

This continued on for months and months.

My cycle was synced up with the full moon!

Well, then I had to figure out why this was. I had to understand it at a deeper level.

I put together the fact that the moon controls the tides of the ocean. Our bodies are at least 60% water, making us able to feel the pushes and pulls from the moon, even if we don’t realize it. Raw foods have a high water content, which gives you a deeper level of hydration. As my body became more hydrated, I became more sensitive to the moon’s cycles. This began my fascination with Astrology.

The full moon represents releasing, the end chapter, shedding light on things that we no longer need to hold on to.

Our period is the releasing of the unused, unfertilized egg(s) and the lining our body built up throughout the month to hold the fertilized egg. It releases something we no longer need to hold on to.

This is also the time our bodies release emotions that have been buried in our subconscious and festering. Hense, why the “crazies” come out around the full moon. Everyone is releasing their old, buried emotions onto one another!

During my research, I read a story of ancient tribes honored this time for release and the women of the village would all get together and go into the woods for about a week to honor their cycle and release all of their emotions. I found this to be beautiful and it deeply resonated with me. I believe we still need to honor this time within ourselves and give ourselves more space to “release” such as journaling, meditation, arts & crafts or maybe just take some extra time to sleep.


So, this may bring up the question of why your cycle may not be synced with the full moon, even though you are not on any form of birth control.


My belief is the toxicity level of the body from years of junk food, too much cooked food, dehydration and chemicals (in the food and medications) causes the body to become off balance with the ways of nature. This creates embalances within your spirit as well and you may feel lost with your connection to Source. These things tend to really numb our spirits and make us unhappy. So, when PMS times comes around and all emotions are on high, really feel what is bothering you.

Journal about what is coming up to the surface to release it. Don’t continue to hold onto it. It’s coming up to the surface for a reason.
